History
“…….building
organizational excellence is no longer a luxury
but an absolute necessity in today’s highly
competitive globalised economy”,
said Dr.C.Rangarajan, a renowned economist and
the former governor of Reserve Bank of India,
addressing a press conference in 2001.
The visionary that he was,
Dr B.L. Maheshwari realized this much earlier
that the ever changing challenges in management
would be organization development and organizational
behavior to meet the emerging needs perpetually.
Thus it became clear that an exclusive centre
for looking into organizational development and
behavior was necessary.
Thus, in 1980, under the Leadership
of Late Dr.B.L.Maheshwari, Centre for Organization
Development (COD) was set up with three core values:
strong client orientation, high standards of quality
and an Informal Growth & performance oriented
work culture, taking institutional grants from
Madura Coats, Bangalore, Bharat Bijlee, Mumbai;
Bank of Baroda and the MMTC.
The Centre has a multidisciplinary
team of Faculty Members and support staff. It
has a self-contained campus spread over 3 Acres.
It has conference facilities for holding workshops,
a specialized library, recreation facilities and
an executive hostel with 37 air-conditioned rooms.
The COD Campus was inaugurated by the President
of India, Shri R. Venkat Raman in the year 1990.
Governance
The Centre has a distinguished
Board of Governors, comprising senior administrators,
chief executives of public and private sector
companies and social scientists. The first
Chairman was Dr. V. Krishnamurthy, a doyen
among Indian leaders. His visionary leadership,
institution building capability and pursuit
of excellence, with concern for people,
led to transformation of two gigantic public
enterprises – BHEL and SAIL. His nurturing
of a new automobile company (Maruti) revolutionized
the automobile and engineering sectors in
India.
He had a long association
with COD as its Chairman from its inception
in 1980 to 1998, which helped the formative
years and set the tone for COD’s leadership
position in organization development.
Mr. Habil F Khorakiwala,
the Executive Chairman of Wockhardt, is
the present Chairman of the Board of Governors.
The strategic direction and overall governance
of the Centre is taken care of by the Board
of Governors, while the day to day affairs
are managed by the Director of the Centre.
Prof. Umeshwar Pandey is the present Director
of the Centre.
