"The reality of the other person lies not in what he reveals to you, but what
he cannot reveal to you. Therefore, if you would understand him, listen not
to what he says, but rather to what he does not say."
Khalil Gibran
.
In recent years the term counseling has been widely used in management
literature to the extent that some writers have suggested that 'managers cannot
avoid acting as counselors'. The word 'counseling' covers a broad spectrum,
from someone who is highly trained to someone who uses counseling skills as
part of another role, such as a manager's role. An employee's problem
performance is often related to non-job factors. The manager is in the best
position to spot and handle problems when they arise. He or she can counsel
to provide relief for the troubled employee. Counseling is a behavioral control
technique used by the manager to solve performance /behavioural problems.
As a counselor, the manager is a helper, discusses the employee's personal
problems that are affecting his or her job performance, aiming to resolve them.
Pettiness, jealousy, anger, moodiness, unwillingness to take risks,
externalization of blame, etc. all are in conflict with functional and healthy
organizations. On the other hand organizations are constantly facing changes
and dilemmas, which affect their employees. The role of "counseling" in the
workplace is increasingly recognized as providing the essential support to help
executives face these challenges and in turn support the organization.
Counseling encourages the employee to recognize and take ownership of both
the problem and the means of resolving it. It is a harmonious process that,
in resolving problems, also increases the employee's confidence, and produces
a sense of achievement and well-being. When practiced appropriately it can
also help to improve employee relations and save management time in
prolonged disciplinary process.
